Lidl and Plodine fastest growing retailers in Croatia

The ten biggest local retailers in Croatia, not including Konzum, realized sales of HRK 23.9 billion (around EUR 3 billion) last year, which is HRK 1.7 billion (around EUR 230 million) more than a year before. The total profit grew by more than HRK 200 million (around EUR 28 million) to HRK 681 million (around EUR 90 million).

In 2016, Lidl took over the position of the second biggest retail chain in Croatia from Plodine. Last year, they fortified their position and are now around EUR 28 million bigger than Plodine, still in the third spot. Lidl's total last year's revenues amounted to around EUR 620 million, a growth by 16%.

Lidl, whose sales exceeded the amount of HRK 4 billion for the first time in the history of its operations in Croatia in 2016, is also realizing a more than solid profit. In 2017, it amounted to around EUR 47 million, more than a half of the total profit of the remaining nine competitors in the country. This points to the fact that Lidl has a nearly ideal business model in place when it comes to retail in Croatia.


However, Plodine, a retail chain owned by Rijeka-based entrepreneur Mile Curkovic, is also in a very good position. In the past years, he has invested more than EUR 270 million in maintaining that position. Last year, they had sales of nearly EUR 600 million, a growth by nearly 10%, whereas their profit jumped by 70% to around EUR 18 million.
