Eiffel Tower to get a glass wall

Paris authorities will have a permanent bulletproof glass wall built around the Eiffel Tower, replacing the fence.

The company in charge of France’s most visited monument announced that glass panels were being installed on the north and the south ends of the perimeter. The toughened glass panels are six centimeters thick and three meters high. Each weighs 1.5 tons.

There will be a total of 450 glass panels, making up the northern and the southern walls around the perimeter. The other two ends will feature a new decorative metal fence, and the entire complex will be surrounded by concrete blocks, as a measure against potential vehicular attacks.

The reconstruction should be finished by September. The French army and police will continue patrolling the area outside the perimeter and within it, as they have done since the November 2015 terrorist attacks in the capital of France.

The glass walls will allow visitors to admire the view from the nearby Champ-de-Mars gardens to the other side of the Seine River that runs through the very center of Paris.
