The liberalization of roaming between Serbia and the European Union might begin soon. As Blic learns, the price should be EUR 0.76 per minute.

Official information says that the abolition of roaming is certain, but that it will not take place as soon as we expect. However, as Blic learns, announcements made on the margins of last week's Sofia summit might be welcomed by our citizens.

– It was announced that the liberalization of roaming should take place in the upcoming months. The price might be EUR .976 per minute six months from now – it was said behind closed doors at one of the meetings.

As Blic learns, the European Commission would be monitoring the implementation in the first two years. This way, providers would be pressured to implement the liberalization, as it is them who will try to prolong the implementation of the new tariff for as long as they can.

This would mark the beginning of the liberalization between Serbia and the EU, and the prices would later shift exclusively in line with the market.

The prime minister's cabinet said that this would be an ideal scenario and that the competent institutions are working on having Serbian citizens get the lower roaming prices as soon as possible.

The signing of the statement on roaming at the Sofia summit, which pertains to the entire Western Balkans, opens the door to cheaper calls for Serbia, but the abolition will take some time, Minister of Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic stated.

Three years ago, Serbia signed an agreement on the lowering of prices with B&H, Montenegro and Macedonia, and the EU now wants this to pertain to the entirety of the Western Balkans. The second item concerns the abolition of roaming for the Western Balkans, when its citizens travel to EU countries.

– I said that it had taken 10 years for EU countries to reach an agreement with telecommunications operators on the abolition of roaming in the countries of the Union, so you can imagine how complicated it is for this directive to be put into effect in the acceding countries – Ljajic pointed out.

Let us remind that European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel has stated that mobile data in roaming will be cheaper for EU and Western Balkans citizens beginning with the next summer and that they will cost EUR 0.7 per megabyte.
