EP to launch initiative for banning animal-testing of cosmetics products

The European Parliament has called for an international convention within the UN which would ban the testing of cosmetics products on animals.

Although such experiments have been forbidden in the EU since 2013, they are still common in 80% of the world's countries. The global ban, as EP representatives say, would come into effect by 2023.

The current ban pertains to the European market as well, where products containing an ingredient tested on animals cannot be sold. Still, the EP points to certain flaws in the European system, as certain ingredients are also used in pharmaceuticals or food and might have been tested on animals under different regulations.

As they point out, the current ban has not affected the development of the cosmetics industry in the EU, as shown by the fact that nearly two million new jobs have been created in the field.

According to Eurobarometer, 2016, as many as 90% of EU citizens support the setting of high standards regarding animal protection.
