Minister of Environmental Protection Goran Trivan has announced that a coordination body and a national laboratory for scientific research of the consequences of the NATO bombing will be formed within the next month.

He clarified that the foundation of a national lab did not entail the establishment of a new scientific institution, but a coordination of all state laboratories capable of carrying out the necessary research.

– It will not be enough just for us to be sure what happened in 1999, but to show the whole world what conclusions we've come up with. We owe it to both the local and the global public to explain what happened and what the potential consequences are – he said.

Trivan clarified that it wasn't only the consequences of the use of depleted uranium that are a concern here, but also the fact that chemical and petrochemical facilities were bombed.

– Not everything has ended up in the ground. A lot of various chemical particles have ended up in the atmosphere and have been potentially transferred to the surrounding countries, such as Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. It is for this reason that, immediately after the bombing, Greece took part in the remediation of certain locations in Serbia that had been targeted during the bombing – Trivan pointed out.

He emphasized that Serbia would use the experiences of nearby countries such as Italy in its research.

In early October 2017, the ministers of health, defense and environmental protection of Serbia held the first joint meeting with members of the Initiative Board, who had proposed for the consequences of the NATO bombing to be determined. The initiative of these prominent scientists had been previously supported by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
