Electronic intellectual property database launched

An electronic database of protected brands, carriers of rights for those brands and the related procedures in progress has been available since Friday, April 27, 2018, on the website of the Customs Administration.

– The Customs Administration thereby gives another important contribution to the upgrade of the intellectual property rights in our country – Sonja Lazarevic, assistant director of the Customs Administration in the Sector for control of implementation of customs regulations, said, announcing the launch of the electronic database, at a gathering on the occasion of the World Intellectual Property Day.

Nebojsa Andjelkovic, head of the Department for Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, said on the occasion that customs administration was an important link in the chain of institutions dealing with protection of intellectual property, which is why it is important for information about what the customs administration is doing to raise the level of protection of those rights to be available to the public.

– The electronic database in relation to protection of intellectual property rights on the border has been formed in line with the Customs Law and is an important step towards the enhancement of the operations of the department in charge of this job within the Customs Administration. It contains data on the decisions of the customs administration which authorize requests by carriers of intellectual property rights for taking measures related to the goods suspected of violating intellectual property rights. There are also data on the goods the marketing of which has been halted, that is, which has been held back due to the suspicion of violation of intellectual property rights, based on authorized requests by carriers of these rights – Andjelkovic added.

The information from the database, Andjelkovic told Tanjug, will be important primarily to entrepreneurs and representatives of the rights – lawyers, so that they would know what is going on with the cases they are involved with themselves.

– The e-database will contain all the data on who the owners of certain brands are and whether procedures are ongoing at the Customs Administration – Andjelkovic said.

This means that, when customs officers are performing control and suspect that an opened shipment contains a counterfeited article, they can see which trademarks are protected in Serbia by accessing the database.

The database is also available to citizens, who, if they suspect that a store is selling counterfeited goods, can address the carriers of the rights for the brand in question, that is, their representatives, and report this, as the database also features information about the law offices that represent certain trademarks.

– If we come across counterfeited trademarks on certain goods, we notify the owner of the company of the potential violation of intellectual property rights – Andjelkovic adds.

The app, which is located on the homepage of the Customs Administration, can be accessed for free by all interested citizens, the public administration and owners of companies whose brands are protected.
