At the beginning of November, Slovenian trade company Merkur, which deals with trade in household appliances, building material and house equipment, will open the first hypermarket in Serbia. The department store of 10,000 square meters and two-level parking lot are being build in Block 51 on Bežanijska Kosa, at the corner of Partizanske avijacije Street and Belgrade-Zagreb highway. The Slovenians have chosen the most exclusive location for this purpose in Belgrade, which used to be too expensive even for Metro cash&carry. Swedish IKEA also wanted to build showroom on that location back in the 90’s.
According to “turn key” principle, the contract with Merkur was signed by Imel group. The value of the investment is €10.5m. It is expected that 120 people will be employed by Merkur.
Imel seriously negotiates with certain European food market chain that intends to have the center built next to Merkur, because the Slovenian bought one third of the land in commercial zone in Block 51, which occupies 5 ha. There is big interest in the remaining land and the only question is if there will be 2 buildings of 10,000 square meters each or double bigger trade center – says Mirko Urošević, sales and marketing director in Imel group.
