ANTIC: Detailed plan of gas connection with Bulgaria soon

Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia Aleksandar Antic announced that a detailed plan of the realization of the project of a gas connection of Serbia and Bulgaria and a map of that pipeline would become known over the next few days.

Antic discussed the pipeline with Bulgarian Minister of Energy Temenuzhka Petkova on Thursday, April 19, 2018, in Sofia, at the meeting of the ministers of energy of the countries of the EU and the Western Balkans.

He said that he had talked to Petkova about gas projects in that part of Europe and their impact on the security of supply to Serbia and Bulgaria, keeping in mind that both countries spent more and more of this energy source, primarily due to the growth of the industrial production.

– The gas connection of Serbia and Bulgaria is a joint priority of both countries and we are working on it intensively. We are also discussing this with representatives of the European Commission, as the EU takes part in financing this project through its grants, and EUR 49.6 million has been set aside for Serbia – Antic said.

He added that Srbijagas, which is realizing the project, was carrying out geotechnical explorations for the pipeline which will deliver gas to Serbia through Bulgaria and that funds had been set aside from the budget for 2018 for the expropriation of the land.

Antic said that “clean energy for all Europeans” and regional connecting had been discussed with the Bulgarian minister at the meeting in Sofia.

As he pointed out, the positions of the European Commission and the European Parliaments on the production of energy from renewable sources are still being harmonized and it is probable that the new goal for 2030 will be to secure 30 to 35% of the total energy in the EU this way, which will be the maximum goal for the Western Balkans countries as well.

– A different dynamics will probably be defined for Serbia – Antic said.

He added that Serbia had been praised for making progress in the usage of renewable energy sources and that 500 new megawatts would be secured that way over the next two years.

– We will discuss the modalities for the second phase of the production of energy from renewable sources with EU representatives. We expect Serbia to remain the driving engine, forging the path for the entire region when it comes to new trends – Antic said.
