Serbian Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic stated this Friday that there was room for the arrival of new store chains to Serbia and called the arrival of Lidl important, as it will stimulate competition.

At the marking of the Competition Day, Ljajic said that, on a national level, “there is room for the arrival of big new players to the market”, and that “the competition is already stiff” on the regional and local level, as there are 45 local and regional retail chains in Serbia.

Ljajic added that 30% of the total trade in Serbia consisted of modern commerce, with the rest comprised of traditional commerce.

– The percentage of green markets and counters in the total trade is enormous, amounting to around 9% – Ljajic said.

He also said that the share of hypermarkets in Serbia was very small, amounting to around 3%.

According to him, the biggest problem is in the field of discount chains, of which there are none in Serbia, whereas in Poland, for example, their share amounts to 30%.
