Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia gets computer system for flood warning in Sava drainage basin – US donation worth a million dollars

The US Embassy in Belgrade has donated a computer system for flood warning in the Sava drainage basin to the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia. During his visit to the institution on Tuesday, April 3, US Ambassador to Serbia Kyle Scott highlighted the importance of a timely warning when it comes to flooding.

– We can't fully predict anything or prevent flooding in the future, but it is important for citizens to be notified on time – Scott said.

The American ambassador specified that the donation also included mapping equipment, expert training and software and added that it was a regional project, as the entire region faced common challenges.

The computer system worth a million dollars, donated by the US European Command and partly designed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, is a result of joint efforts of the US Government and the members of the International Commission for the Sava Drainage Basin in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Montenegro.

– The project will be of great humanitarian importance in the sense of reduction of the negative consequences of potential floods in the Sava drainage basin and is an excellent example of planning, coordination and realization on an international level to the end of securing a safer and better quality life in the region – the director of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia, Jugoslav Nikolic, said and added that the system would be a very important link in the flood warning system.

The system enables the monitoring of the state of the Sava in real time, contributing to a better flood defense.
