The City of Belgrade will set aside about 13m EUR for reconstruction of railway crossings and tracks in 2009 in order to put the city railways in operation. CIP Institute has designed the study according to which the city train could operate every 15 to 20 minutes.
- All major cities in the world have the city railways, while we have the network of railways that passes through the city and is not used. If we manage to have the railway tracks reconstructed next year and if we procure several new trains on leasing, this system can be used to transport huge number of people who will then avoid travelling to the city by car - said the Mayor of Belgrade, Dragan Đilas.
He added that the people from all major European cities that had the developed subway systems would be invited to point to the most realistic concept for Belgrade.
The city transportation will be improved next year since certain number of new trams will be purchased, while certain number of existing ones will be reconstructed and air conditioning systems will be installed in them.
