Memorandum on reconstruction of Belgrade-Zagreb railway signed – Works on Serbian territory worth around EUR 250 million

Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic and Croatian Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butkovic signed the Memorandum on cooperation on upgrading railway transport, which envisions a joint reconstruction of the Belgrade-Zagreb railway, on March 9, 2018.

The memorandum was signed at the Palace of Serbia in the presence of Serbian Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic.

The railway is 412 kilometers long, and the reconstruction will allow the travel time to be reduced from the current seven and a half hours to slightly over three hours.

Presidents of Serbia and Croatia, Aleksandar Vucic and Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic, discussed the reconstruction of the railway in February in Zagreb, following which the ministries in charge agreed the signing of the memorandum. This is the first result of the visit of the president of Serbia to Croatia.

The memorandum envisages cooperation on modernization of railway infrastructure, facilitation of procedures on rail border crossing between the two states and joint applications with EU funds and other international institutions regarding the modernization of the Belgrade-Zagreb railway on Corridor 10.

The Serbian section of the railway is 116 kilometers long, and according to the data of the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure sent to Tanjug, the reconstruction of both sets of tracks on the entire Golubinci-Sid section, that is, up to the Croatian border, as well as the modernization of the part from Ruma to Sid, is planned.

Around EUR 250 million will be needed for the reconstruction of the railway on the territory of Serbia, whereas the Croatian section will require a slightly higher amount.

The Serbian Railways Infrastructure previously told Tanjug that the Belgrade-Zagreb railway through Serbia was double-tracked, electrified and designed for the speed of 120 km/h.
