(Zorana Mihajlovic) Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic stated today that the Government of Serbia might consider opening a public call for the construction of the Nis-Merdare-Pristina highway.

At the same time, the Ministry of Construction, transport and Infrastructure of Serbia issued the location information for the construction of the Nis-Merdare highway, for the first section, from Nis to Plocnik, which is the first step towards the realization of the project.

As explained, the location information is a part of the procedure of issuing location requirements and is the starting point for the realization of an infrastructural project, including the preparation and adoption of the necessary project documentation.

The document contains, among other things, the plan of the highway's connections with the surroundings, the rules of construction and the rules of the highway corridor's crossings with other infrastructural and transportation systems.

The value of the construction of the first section of the Nis-Merdare-Pristina highway, 40 kilometers long, amounts to EUR 212 million.

The future Nis-Merdare-Pristina-Tirana-Durres highway, which will connect Serbia and Corridor 10 with the Albanian Port of Durres, is 384 kilometers long, with the length of the Nis-Merdare section amounting to 77 kilometers.

The head of the European Investment Bank (EIB) regional representation for the Western Balkans, Dubravka Negre, stated recently that she expected the financing for the first section, from Nis to Plocnik, to be approved in the second half of the year.

Negre said that the value of the works in the first phase (the Nis-Plocnik section) was around EUR 240 million and that it was expected for Serbia to get at least 20% as grants, whereas the rest is to be financed from the proceeds of the loans from the EIB and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
