As part of the project Keeping Up with Europe, a forum dealing with the phenomenon of a drop in bee population in Europe and Serbia was held on Saturday, February 18, 2018, in Jagodina. This global problem was addressed by Professor Mica Mladenovic of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade.
– There's a prominent drop in bee population everywhere in the world: America, Israel, countries in Africa, countries of the European Union, and it ranges up to 45% – Mladenovic told the beekeepers of Jagodina and Pomoravlje.
He also said that the number of bees in Serbia had dropped by 20 to 37% and by 2.65 to 13.04% at the Center for Selection of Queen Bees in four years.
Markovic pointed out that there were as many as 17 causes for this, the main ones being diseases, varroa and nosemosis and unskilled use of pesticides and insecticides in agriculture.
The drop in population and health of bees has an impact on the country's economy, not only in terms of production of honey and other related products, but in terms of yields of grains, industrial plants and fruit pollinated by bees, it was said at this very well-attended forum.
