Regional Landfill Subotica to start working in March 2018

The Regional Landfill Subotica (Regionalna deponija Subotica), located in Bikovo, should start operating in March 2018, the YuEco portal reports.

The contractor is expected to bring the construction of the regional system of solid municipal waste management, financed by the EU, to a close by this date.

The regional landfill covers Subotica and six municipalities – Kanjiza, Senta, Backa Topola, Mali Idjos, Coka and Novi Knezevac.

The long-term goal of the construction of the landfill is the preservation of the environment and people's health, and the changes in the entire system include waste sorting and organic waste composting, whereas the landfill itself is built so that it doesn't pollute the ground and the underground waters.

The waste sorting will initially be done at the landfill as well, but the long-term goal is to implement primary selection, which entails waste selection by citizens themselves in their homes, YuEco adds.
