Following last week’s artificial heart implantation, a first for Serbia, a team of surgeons at the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases Dedinje performed an implantation of a partial artificial heart as well. The procedure was performed at the institute after 20 years. The patient is expected to undergo the post-operation recovery without problems.

The team which performed this complicated procedure was headed by Dr Predrag Milojevic, former director of the clinic.

Dr Milovan Bojic, director of the Dedinje Institute, explains for Politika that the implantation of an artificial heart or a partial artificial heart is only a transition towards the transplantation of the organ.

Total artificial hearts are implanted in patients with weakened atriums, whereas partial artificial hearts are implanted in patients with one functioning ventricle.

The purchase of the partial artificial heart is financed by the National Health Insurance Fund, and the Dedinje Institute had a total of five such devices. Another one has already been implanted and the remaining three will be implanted in patients who need them the most over the next few days.
