Belgrade to be center of Western Balkans Transport Community

The seat of the Western Balkans Transport Community will be in Belgrade, as confirmed on December 7, at the first ministerial meeting of the Council of the European Union and the Western Balkans in Brussels, the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia announced.

– The choice of Belgrade as the seat of the Transport Community, from which activities within regional projects and the creation of a single market in the field of transport are to be coordinated is a great acknowledgment of the Government of Serbia and everything the country has done to the end of regional connections. It is especially important that the decision is unanimous and supported by all representatives from the regions and the EU members – Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Zorana Mihajlovic said.

She pointed out that the decision was an important step towards the implementation of the Treaty on the Transport Community, signed last summer at the summit of the leaders of the Western Balkans, held in Trieste.

– Infrastructural or any other type of connecting is a way to a quicker economic development of Serbia and the entire region. Each road built brings new investments and new jobs – the minister said.

She added that the decision to make Belgrade the seat of the Transport Community meant that the city would be able to host all the important meetings in the field of transport concerning the region and to have the leading role in coordinating the future activities on connecting the region in terms of infrastructure and economy.
