Things never to do in hotel rooms

Most tourists throw their suitcases on the bed as soon as they enter a hotel room, thereby making their first big mistake.

A suitcase is easier to unpack if not on the floor, that's true, but most hotels have a stand or a dresser for this purpose. The suitcase has been in contact with the dirt on the ground or in the trunk throughout the journey and shouldn't be put on the bed.

Another mistake tourists often make is taking a bath. All studies point to the bathtub's being the third filthiest thing in the apartment. Hotel maids spend less than half an hour on average cleaning the room and have no time to scrub the bathtub. The sink and the toilet bowl aside, other parts of the bathroom are not scrubbed very often.

The mini-bar should be left alone, as the prices are several times higher than in stores. However, many do have a drink and then replace the bottle with the one bought at the supermarket, which later causes problems, as many hotels are equipped with sensors detecting the opening of the mini-bar.

By far the filthiest thing in a hotel room is the TV remote, as it is full of bacteria contributed by everyone who's ever been in the room. Hotel maids almost never wipe the remote, and the only solution is for the tourist to wash their hands after switching the TV off. The second filthiest thing in a hotel room is the phone.

Jewelry should never be left lying on a dresser, but not for fear that it might be stolen. The problem is that guests often forget where they've left their jewelry and are liable to accidentally pushing it down on the floor.

Shoes should never be wiped with a bathroom towel. It is extremely rude, and some hotel maids report such incidents. The closet usually contains a shoe shine sponge, and if not, a hotel maid will gladly provide one. It is also advisable to use antibacterial wet-wipes to disinfect everything you expect to use frequently upon entering the room.
