European wine production at all-time low in 2017

This year has seen the all-time low in the production of wine in Europe, and the downward trend includes France as well, which is experiencing its weakest post-war harvest.

The production is affected by climate changes and will, according to the data available, drop by 14% compared to the previous harvest, AFP reports. The drop, which lowers the production to its all-time low, is primarily down to the biggest three producers – Italy, France and Spain have recorded drops by 21, 19 and 15%.

The European Commission has estimated that 145 million hectoliters of wine have been produced in the EU, a drop by 14% compared to the previous five years.

Italy remains the biggest producer, with 40 million hectoliters, followed by France with 36.9 and Spain with 36.8 million hectoliters of wine produced.
