(Jaap Sprey) Jaap Sprey, the new head of the EBRD Resident Office in Montenegro, is taking up his new post in Podgorica today.
Mr Sprey previously held the position of EBRD Associate Director for Finance and Development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Cyprus, Greece, Romania and Turkey.
A Dutch national, Jaap Sprey joined the Bank in 1997 to set up and manage the EBRD Ashgabat Resident Office in Turkmenistan. In 2004 he moved to the EBRD’s London Headquarters to work in the natural resources team and later joined the Russia and Central Asia team.
In 2006, he joined BNP Paribas and later the European Commission, before returning to the EBRD in 2011 as regional manager for SME finance and development.
In his new position, Mr Sprey will lead the EBRD’s operations in Montenegro, focusing on making the economy more competitive, integrated and green.
– I am honored to take on this new task at a time when Montenegro is advancing towards EU membership and is becoming ever more important for regional integration of the Balkans and south-eastern Europe. The EBRD has long been a champion of Western Balkans integration, financing the development of transport and energy infrastructure links both within the region and among neighbors. I am committed to building on the successful track record of the Bank in Montenegro and the region. Together with the team we will work hard to help boost the Montenegrin economy through investment, advice and support for reforms – Sprey said.
To date, the EBRD has invested a total of €530 million in various sectors of the Montenegrin economy, the press release says.
