Greece to implement overnight stay tax

In its struggle to counter the black market and unregistered apartments, Greece has adopted a law which is to come into effect on January 1, 2018, which introduces a tax on overnight stays. In practice, this means that all owners of accommodation facilities will have to register their guests, whereas the tourists, depending on where they choose to rest, will pay these fees per accommodation unit for each overnight stay throughout their vacation.

Those who opt for apartments will be affected by the raise the least, as the fee will amount to half a euro per apartment, whereas the fees in hotels will be raised depending on the category.

The fee in one- and two-star hotels will be EUR 0.5 per room per overnight stay. In three-star hotels, the fee will be EUR 1.5, and in four-star hotels, guests will be charged EUR 3. Finally, the fee for an overnight stay in five-star hotels will amount to EUR 4, Politika learns.

– This pertains to tourism companies registered in Greece only. The new regulation does not oblige us, which is logical, but all providers of accommodation, both private ones and hotels, which will need to register guests and pay taxes in line with the number of overnight stays realized – the director of YUTA, Aleksandar Senicic, says for Politika and adds that he assumes that apartment owners will include these fees in accommodation prices in advance, whereas hotels will probably charge the amount during registration.

The measures will probably not end there, as Greece announces rigorous control of tax and tourism inspection in order for those who have operated in the black market so far to be legalized.
