Hellenic Sugar, which has two sugar plants in Serbia - in Zabljak and Crvenka, started this year's processing of sugar beet by starting lime furnaces in both plants, Greek spokesman Christos Alexopoulos says.

In sugar beet processing business, he said, more than 850 seasonal workers will be engaged, so beet will be received 24 hours a day, starting today.

This year, Hellenic Sugar has contracted beet with more than 23,000 hectares which is 5,000 hectares more than last year.

- When it is taken into consideration, 58,000 hectares of sugar beet is planted in Serbia, it is clear that Greek company significantly increased the share of its production – Alexopulos says.

He emphasizes that as well as last year, more than 180,000 tons of sugar will be processed and delivered to the market, but that this amount is less than planned, purchased and processed 1,250,000 tons of sugar beet last year.

Production was affected by drought, but nevertheless, with this production we can be satisfied – Alexopulos explained.
