Construction of four irrigation systems in Vojvodina financed by Abu Dhabi Fund starts

President of the Government of Vojvodina Igor Mirovic and Minister of Agriculture Branislav Nedimovic took a tour of the double-purpose system Medja today. The works are financed through the Irrigation Program of the Abu Dhabi Fund and will provide irrigation for 762 hectares of agricultural areas, worth EUR 142,000.

Mirovic said he was pleased that the first works on the realization of the 11 projects had begun in the territory of Vojvodina. Of these, four will start today, another five in the upcoming days, whereas two big projects will start by the end of the year.

– Together with projects in central and southern Serbia, we will build irrigation systems covering over 50,000 hectares, which is the best response possible to climate and drought issues – he said.

Mirovic also pointed out that continuity in realization of such projects was important so that irrigation systems would be brought closer to the European average.

He announced that a proposal for the allocation of another RSD 100 million to Vode Vojvodine for the preparation of the project documentation for the second phase of utilizing the Abu Dhabi Fund and the realization of the second phase of irrigation in Vojvodina would be made at the next session of the Provincial Assembly. The said fund provides a total of USD 100 million to Serbia.

Nedimovic said that around RSD 1.5 billion would be invested in irrigation in 2017 and that the number of hectares irrigated might grow to a six-digit figure in the next two years.
