Although the foundation stone for the stem cell bank at the Institute for Health Protection of Mother and Child of Serbia “Dr. Vukan Cupic” was laid down back in 2012, the building in the yard of this health institution in New Belgrade will not be completed by the end of 2017. The Institute confirmed this in late 2016. However, some works will be carried out, as a tender for construction and finishing works on the facility has been opened.

As the documentation states, this is the sixth part of the first phase of the extension of the stem cell bank, and the public procurement has been estimated at RSD 11.3 million without VAT. The works entail mechanical, electrical and water supply and sewer works.

Once it's finished, the building, which now has close to 600 square meters, will be able to store up to 10,000 stem cell samples. Let us remind that the difference between private and public stem cell banks is that the former charge for the service, whereas the latter don't. Furthermore, a public bank would be available to everybody in need of stem cells due to a disease, instead of solely to those keeping stem cells in the bank.

Until the first public bank is completed, everybody who wants to keep umbilical cord stem cells can put them in one of the foreign facilities registered in Serbia, where the average price of keeping stem cells for a period of 20 years is around EUR 2,000.

The bid submission deadline is September 14.
