Serbia to get six new radiation devices – Machines to become operational in February 2018

Six new radiation devices along with the accompanying equipment, the bunkers they should be set up inside of, should start operating in radiotherapy centers in Serbia by the end February. The procurement was enabled by a loan from the World Bank in the amount of EUR 18 million.

The agreement between the best bidder and the Ministry of Health was signed at the Palace of Serbia, RTS learns.

The clinical centers in Nis and Kragujevac will get one device each, one will go to the Health Center of Kladovo, and the remaining three will go to the Oncology Institute of Belgrade.

Serbia will thereby finally have one device per 250,000 residents, which is a global standard.

Minister of Health Zlatibor Loncar said for RTS that the new equipment should be put into operation by the end of February. The total amount includes the education of healthcare workers.

– It's the turnkey system – Loncar said.

According to him, once the new equipment arrives, there should be no more waiting lists in Serbia.

The minister adds that there are negotiations with the World Bank about the purchase of a new accelerator for Sremska Kamenica and notes that a tender for the procurement of a device that is, as he says, more advanced than a cyber knife should be placed soon.

– The aim is to prevent patients from leaving the country and providing them with the best possible therapy in Serbia instead – Loncar pointed out.
