Mexican beers head list of EU imports – Serbian brands take second place

The EU imported 46.9 million liters of beer from Serbia in 2016, i.e. 13% of the total imports from the countries outside the EU, whereas nearly 179.5 million liters was imported from Mexico, making for nearly a half of the imports.
American beer takes third place (36.5 million liters), followed by beer from Belarus (20.6), China (16.4) and Russia (11.6 million), according to Eurostat.
The EU produced 39 billion liters of beer last year, 400 million more than in 2015 and amounting to 76 liters per resident. Also, nearly 900 million liters of beer containing less than 0.5% or no alcohol was produced in 2016.
Two thirds of the alcoholic beer in the EU are produced in six member-states, and the list of the biggest producers in 2016 is headed by Germany, with 8.3 billion liters, amounting to 21% of the total production in the EU.
Holland was the biggest exporter, with 1.9 billion liters of alcoholic beer exported, followed by Germany (1.7), Belgium (1.5), France (0.7) and Britain (0.6). The main exporting destination for the EU beer is the USA, followed by China and Canada.
