Sberbank becomes shareholder in Mercator

Sberbank Russia bought 18.53% of Mercator's shares at the starting price of EUR 40.6 million at the auction on Friday, July 7, 2017. The shares in question are the ones that the Russian bank confiscated from Agrokor Investment AG, headquartered in the Netherlands and 100% owned by Ivica Todoric, as the security interest on the loans given to Agrokor.
No interested bidder applied for the auction, so the umbrella bank of the Russian Sberbank bought 18.53% of Mercator's shares, the Slovenian media reported.
According to the Finance newspaper, this was expected, as Sberbank had asked EUR 40.6 million for less than a fifth of the shares of the Slovenian chain, which wouldn't have provided potential investors with managing rights, as nearly 70% of the ownership remains in the Agrokor concern, which bought Mercator in 2014 for nearly half a billion euros.
