VUCIC: It is in everybody interest for the strike in Fiat to end as soon as possible

(Aleksandar Vucic) President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic stated on July 7 that it was in everybody's interest for the workers' strike in the Fiat car factory in Kragujevac to end as soon as possible. He said that he understood the workers and that he was always on their side, but that the problem needed to be solves as soon as possible.

When asked whether the state had the mechanisms to influence the ending of the strike, Vucic said that Serbia was a minority owner and that he was in no position to give orders to the majority owner as to how to solve the problem.

Vucic said that a foreign company had been interested in investing in Serbia and that Kragujevac had been one of the offered destinations, but that its representatives had not visited the town because of the strike in Fiat.

The general strike of around 2,000 production workers from both shifts has been taking place since June 27. The strikers demand that the gross base salary be raised from RSD 38,000 to RSD 50,000, that the workers currently performing several operations be unloaded by a reorganization of labor, that efficiency bonuses for 2016 be paid to workers and that commuting expenses be covered in cases of unavailability of public transport in Kragujevac.
