Intersport pours more than EUR 3 m in new shops in Serbia - Sports equipment online store to start in the fall 2017

Slovenian group Intersport ISI is planning to open 15 new sports stores in Serbia by 2020, and the estimated value of initial investment in this period will be EUR 3-5 m. According to the company, approximately 80 workers should get a job in that period.

New shops should be expected, as they say, in cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, such as Vrsac, Sabac, Gornji Milanovac, Uzice, Kraljevo, Krusevac, etc. Also new facilities are planned in Belgrade and Novi Sad.

For the moment, Intersport Srbija has 15 shops with 172 employees and 10.000 m2 sales area and the company states that our market has been recognized as the most prospective one in the region.

The first shop in Serbia was opened in 2002, in Mercator center Belgrade. This facility should soon be renovated in line with the latest world standards of Intersport company, head of Intersport ISI Group, Mateja Jesenek, says for eKapija.In late 2017, Intersport Srbija will near even more range of quality sports equipment through modern digital offer.


- This year, Intersport Srbija celebrates 15 years of successful business and we have 15 opened shops. Our market has a huge potential for sports brand development such as Intersport so our priority is retail network expansion which also means new hires – Branko Mirkovic, head of Intersport Srbija outlined.

Another news in business should soon reach Serbia. It is the Athlete's Foot franchise which Intersport bought in 2012 and which is aimed at customers who want a specific fashion style. This new brand of specialized footwear has already been present in 26 countries and is expected that by the end of this year or early next year the first stores in Serbia could open.


In 2016, in the region, Intersport ISI had a turnover of more than EUR 107 m, while sales in Serbia was around 11 m. Intersport Serbia says the company has been generating growth of 20% this year and sales growth trend is expected in the next years.

The company has also been present in the region since 1999, and by the end of 2016 it was a part of Mercator. Then, it was sold to Polish private investment fund Enterprise Investors, which has invested in nearly 140 companies in Central and Eastern Europe since 1990.

In the countries of former Yugoslavia - Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro - Intersport ISI has 108 retail outlets and nearly 1,000 employees, and in addition it has 13 stores more with franchise partners. The company is at the top of sporting brands shops, focusing on equipment for hiking, running, football, fitness, cycling, swimming, skiing and camping, as well as with a range of global and exclusive brands.

Mateja Jasenak says and that with a new owner, Intersport ISI Group got new development potential.

- The new owner of Intersport opened new opportunities and thus our customers get everything they need for efficient and successful doing sports. In our region, Intersport is the first sports store chain, and our new organization headquartered in Slovenia, is already bringing positive changes in business and organizational plan. Although the change of owner and separation from the parent company was a demanding process, in 2017 we expect positive results and business growth - she says.

Jesenek states that the company "especially in Serbia, expects an intense expansion of the brand, which will be implemented through modern retail network development and it will contribute to rapid growth of sports equipment market in Serbia."
