Indian tourists might soon discover Serbia as a new holiday destination. The biggest Indian tourist operator Interglobe is trying to find a partner for this region, with Belgrade as one of the shortlisted candidates, Vecernje Novosti learns.

As the Belgrade newspaper reports, they are looking for an airline to establish four direct routes to India – to New Delhi and Mumbai initially, and then to another two cities. Interglobe owns 32% of the Indian tourist market, which means that a third of Indian tourists use their services. They have as many as 12,500 sales outlets and the low-cost airline IndiGo, which owns 110 Airbus A320 planes.

– This is a tourist conglomerate. Their airline operates in the territory of India and provides flights to the Emirates and Singapore as well – explains Zoran Drazeta, owner of Globkon, Interglobe's partner and business consultant in this region.

– If Air Serbia becomes their partner, it will lead to at least a thousand passengers a week, maybe even more. We would try to keep them in Serbia. This is a great opportunity for our tourism, both for the hotel business and the village tourism – he says.

He adds that “if we don't agree, Croatia Airlines or the Greek Aegean certainly will. We are negotiating with the Government of Serbia and the Tourist Organization of Serbia”.

According to Drazeta, Serbia has been chosen at the recommendation by Naresh Khattar, head of one of the most powerful Indian families. He has visited Serbia two times himself.
