On May 31, 2017, Aleksandar Vucic assumed the duties of the President of the Republic of Serbia, after swearing the oath on the Constitution of Serbia and the Miroslav Gospel at the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

– I swear to put all my efforts into maintaining the sovereignty and the integrity of the territory of the Republic of Serbia, including Kosovo and Metohija as its integral part, as well as into honoring human and minority rights and freedoms, adhering to and protecting the Constitution and the laws, maintaining the peace and the prosperity of all the citizens of the Republic of Serbia and fulfilling my duties conscientiously and responsibly – reads the oath signed by Aleksandar Vucic.

Vucic also said that he would fight for peace in Serbia and the entire region and said that he would talk with everyone, offer solutions, insist on dialogue and compromise, because, as he added, he strongly believes that this is the foundation of all progress, success and a safe future.

– In order to maintain ourselves, we need to talk to everybody, but we also need to strengthen our defense capacities, as that is the only way to protect the country from those who threaten us every day – pointed out the new president of Serbia.

– Through hard work, common sense and luck we need to win ourselves, we can create a region in which differences are an advantage instead of a cause of conflict.

Vucic was elected president in the first round of the election of April 2, having won 55.08% of the votes, which amounts to over two million voters.

A day earlier, Vucic resigned from his position as the prime minister of Serbia. The duties of the prime minister will be performed by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic until the new prime minister is elected.

The National Assembly recognized the resignation on May 31. As the president of the state, Aleksandar Vucic now has 30 days to propose the new prime minister.
