The facility of Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) for production and wholesale of natural compressed gas in the gas field Ostrovo near Pozarevac was put into operation today, and the plan is for it to produce around 9,000 tons of gas a year.

The construction of the gas collection station and the facility for production of compressed gas cost RSD 400 million.

Minister of Mining and Energy Aleksandar Antic said that the gas market would expand and that consumer demand was increasing and added that such an increase could not always be accompanied by the development of quality infrastructure which could deliver the gas to industrial and other consumers.

– This facility is very important as it enables us to meet the demands of industrial consumers without building transportation infrastructure, that is, a pipeline – Antic said.

As he explained, the Ostrovo facility can cover demands for compressed gas of the economy in the entire area, from the company Bambi, which is a big industrial consumer, to all other consumers.

The minister added that Ostrovo was an ecologically important project, considering the fact that compressed gas is ecologically the best and cleanest fuel, practically the fuel of the future.

Kirill Tyurdenev, CEO of NIS, reminded that, ever since the opening of the Palic facility in 2014, NIS had been producing and selling compressed natural gas, thereby meeting two goals – meeting the demands of the market for alternative and affordable fuel and stimulating environmental responsibility.

– Compressed natural gas is certainly the fuel of the future and can replace petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas, featuring the lowest amount of emitted harmful gases – Tyurdenev said.

The total value of investment in the construction of the gas station and the compressed natural gas facility is RSD 400 million, and the investment was completed in March 2017. The newly built facility should produce 25 tons of compressed natural gas a day, amounting to around 9,000 tons a year.

Due to its characteristics, compressed natural gas is considered the energy source of the future, and its main ingredient is methane, which features the lowest coefficient of CO2 emission compared to all other derivatives, contributing thereby to environmental protection as an ecologically clean fuel.

As stated, its usage allows for excellent vehicle performance and is cost-effective. Compressed natural gas is used as an energy-generating product or as a derivative, and it is also used as heating fuel in industry and households and as engine fuel in internal combustion engines.
