Vinarce-Djordjevo railway section on Corridor 10 opens for traffic – Value of works USD 9.5 million

The reconstructed 15-km railway section on Corridor 10 from Vinarce to Djordjevo was opened for traffic on April 25, and the works had cost around EUR 9.5 million. The train speed has increased from 50 to 120 km/h.

The modernization and reconstruction of that part of the railway marked the completion of all three southern sections of the international railway Corridor 10, totaling 46.5 km in length, between Nis and Presevo.

The works, whose total value is USD 30.4 million, are financed by the Russian state loan, and they began on April 18, 2016.

The main contractor was RZD International, a member of the Russian Railways, along with local subcontractors.

The reconstruction of three southern section from the Russian loan is the first big reconstruction in this part of the railway Corridor 10 after half a century, as the previous overhaul of the Nis-Presevo railway took place in the 1960s.

The previous reconstruction of the Vinarce-Djordjevo railway was carried out in 1965. A total of 11 road crossings were reconstructed within the project, of which four in the city itself. USD 400,000 was spent on developing the crossings alone.

The section of the Nis-Presevo railway is planned for train traffic from Belgrade to Thessaloniki, from Nis to Presevo and from Nis to Leskovac. The other two southern sections are Bujanovac-Bukarevac (13.7 km) and Vranjska Banja-Ristovac (17.7 km).

The reconstruction of the three northern section was completed earlier, namely: Sopot Kosmajski-Kovacevac (18 km), Mala Krsna-Velika Plana (29 km) and Ruma-Golubinci (18 km). The USD 800 million Russian loan is meant for the modernization of Serbian railways, and, counting in Serbia's participation, the value of the projects amounts to USD 940 million.

The projects in question are the reconstruction of six sections of Corridor 10, with a total length of 112 km, the modernization of the Belgrade-Pancevo and Stara Pazova-Novi Sad railways, the reconstruction of the Bar railway from Resnik to Valjevo and the procurement of 27 new Russian diesel train engines.
