The EU regulators have forbidden German companies HeidelbergCement and Schwenk from taking over the Croatian cement manufacturer Cemex Croatia, as it would considerably reduce the competition, said Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner for Competition, on April 5.

Vestager said that there was “clear evidence that this takeover would have led to price increases in Croatia, which could have adversely affected the construction sector”.

The EU regulators said that German companies had failed to offer adequate remedies addressing these concerns. According to the EU estimates, the combined shares of the companies in the Croatian market would have been 45-50%.

Cemex Croatia is a member of the multinational Cemex Group, headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico.
