In March 2017, the Russian gas company Gazprom increased deliveries of gas to the countries which might be the clients of the Turkish Stream pipeline, with the export to Serbia jumping by 37.6% year-over-year.

– We can see good dynamics in demand from the countries which would be able to receive gas from Russia along the Turkish Stream pipeline. The export to Serbia grew by 37.6%, to Bulgaria by 19.4% - says Gazprom, as reported by Tass.

During March, supply to foreign clients increased by 3.3%, whereas the export to Turkey alone jumped by 51%. Gazprom's export to countries outside the CIS rose by 12.5% in 2016 to the record 179.3 billion cubic meters of gas, according to the previously published data.

The export of gas to Great Britain jumped by 59.9% to 17.8 billion cubic meters, whereas the export to France jumped by 18.1% to 11.5 billion cubic meters of gas, and supplies to Poland, Austria, Holland and Denmark also increased.

Other countries also imported larger quantities of Russian gas. Supplies to Croatia rose by 54.8%, to Macedonia by 56%, to Greece by 35%, to Bulgaria by 2.1%, to Italy by 1.1%, says the Russian press agency.

The Russian authorities announced the Turkish Stream pipeline in December 2014 as a substitute for the canceled South Stream. The plan was for the land section of the pipeline to have four branches, each with 15.75 billion cubic meters of capacity. Nevertheless, the negotiations were stopped due to a crisis in the relations between Turkey and Russia.

Following the talks between the presidents of Turkey and Russia, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin, of August 2016, the decision was made to re-initiate the works on the Turkish Stream pipeline and to found a working group. The pipeline should go across the Black Sea to the European part of Turkey to the border with Greece. The project has been estimated at EUR 11.4 billion.
