EPS and "Inter Rao" signed protocol on cooperation – Russian company willing to invest 2 billion EUR in projects in Serbia

"Electric Power Company of Serbia” and Russian national company "Inter
Rao EES" have signed protocol
on cooperation with the aim of construction of new production capacities in
Serbia. The CEO of company "Inter Rao EES", Jevgenij Vjačeslavovič
Dod, said that that company was able and willing to invest 2 billion EUR in
power supply capacities in Serbia and they were ready to offer some interesting
projects, but he did not specify which.
According to his words, "Inter Rao" has both experience and money for
something like that and it currently builds facilities with the capacity of
over 2,000 MW in Russia, Tajikistan, Georgia and Kazakhstan, which is one
fourth of existing capacities in Serbia.
Chief executives of EPS and company "Inter Rao EES" say that the protocol will be concretized in three months, when the first projects are suggested.
AS they explained, the priority of both sides is construction of coal-powered steam power plant, but they added that they had only talked about cooperation and construction of hydroelectric power plants on the Lim and the Drina. Also, both sides agreed that the protocol is not obligatory and that the decisions about participation in all projects would be made by the Government of Serbia.
Dod pointed out that the plan of "Inter Rao EES" was to build
capacities of 1,000 MW outside the borders of Russia, and that the development
strategy anticipated expansion to the Balkans, Kavkaz and Near East, Central Asia
and China and Far East.
Chief Executive of EPS, Vladimir Đorđević, said that Serbia’s priority was construction
of two coal-powered power plants and announcement of tender for selection of
strategic partner, because Serbia needs electricity and each change in the way
of selection of partner demands much time for collecting of documentation.
According to his words, the protocol that was signed today came as a result of
six-month negotiations and it does not mean that the Government will give up
the tender for strategic partner for construction of steam power plant.
