Serbia exports close to 3 million tons of corn in 2016

The director of the Agriculture Sector of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia, Zarko Galetin, estimated that it was a paradox that Serbia would have close to three million tons of corn for export in 2016, placing it among the top ten exporters of the grain, while at the same time importing pigs and pork meat in enormous amount.

Galetin said for the Agrosmart portal that Serbia had imported 15,000 tons of pork meat from January till October 2016, and that the total value of the import amounted to more than USD 37 million.

He also said that the agriculture and the food industry had had USD 2.61 billion worth of export in the first ten months of 2016, an increase of 9.1% compared to the corresponding period of 2015.

He added that the results of the foreign trade in 2016 were not yet final and that, considering the said trend, the increase of the export of agricultural and food products in 2016 might amount to around 10%.

According to him, a surplus of USD 1.48 billion was made in the trade of agricultural and food products with the world in the ten months, a growth of 31.4% compared to 2015.

– Viewed from that angle, we could say that this year has been more successful than the previous one. In general, the economic year in all sectors, in all branches of the agri-sector, has turned out better than the last one. Unfortunately, the bad import structure remained, with grains, fruits and vegetables making up around 46% of the total agrarian exports, whereas all the other production and processing branches have underperformed when it comes to exporting to foreign markets – Galetin said.
