Certain hotels in the Italian town of Assisi offer free stays to female guests who get pregnant during their visit, as well as to their partners. The town, which is located in the Umbria region in central Italy, is participating in the “Fertility Room” project, initiated by the local tourism council.

The aim is to stimulate local tourism, but also to increase the birth rate in the country.

Some hotels offer a money-back guarantee, whereas others offer a free second night for all guests who have had a baby nine months after staying in the hotel.

Italy has the lowest birth rate in the European Union and one of the lowest ones in the world, with only eighty babies born for each 1,000 citizens in 2015.

The project also includes hotels Agriturismo Basaletto, Agriturismo Casa Faustina, Agriturismo Le Mandrie di San Paolo, Hotel Cristallo, Dal Moro Assisi Gallery Hotel, Hotel Dei Priori, Hotel Fontebella, Hotel Il Castello, Hotel Windsor Savoia and Villamena.
