State auditors find irregularities in spending EUR 59 billion – Less than third of 1,364 SAI reports resolved

The State Audit Institution (SAI) found irregularities in spending EUR 59 billion from 2008 till 2014, and, of 1,364 SAI reports, only 31.2% have been resolved, as reported in the new issue of NIN.

Some cases, as confirmed for the weekly by General State Auditor Radoslav Sretenovic, have been in court for as many as four years.

– Reports are being solved slowly. Procedures based on our reports, whether it's offense charges or criminal charges, take a long time. It's not up to me to assess the independence of courts, but it would be better for the state if procedures took less time to complete – Sretenovic pointed out.

He announced that the list of names to be found in 31 criminal charges filed by the SAI in 2016 would be published shortly.

– The penalties are mild and need to increase, as they will soon be equal to something like seat belt penalties – Sretenovic said.
