VUCEVIC: At least EUR 30 million to be invested in development of Novi Sad

(Milos Vucevic) The selection of Novi Sad as the European Capital of Culture in 2021 is a great opportunity for Novi Sad and Serbia, at least EUR 30 million will be invested, stated the mayor of Novi Sad, Milos Vucevic, on Monday, October 17.
Novi Sad is the first city outside the EU to get the prestigious title of the European Capital of Culture, Vucevic says and adds that investments in infrastructure, cultural institutions and program projects by the non-governmental sector and individuals are to follow.
– We are honored to enter that circle. At least EUR 30 million will be invested, and we might even go up to EUR 100 million. We expect a strong support by the Government of Serbia and the provincial government. The City of Novi Sad will run the project, but we can't fully succeed without the Government of Serbia and the provincial government – he said.
According to him, one of the first moves will be the restoration of facades in the city's center and Petrovaradin Podgradje. He says that this would recover that part of the city and initiate infrastructural improvements.
– Petrovaradin Podgradje has been neglected for decades, and is an integral part of the Petrovaradin Fortress, as thousands of tourists pass through it, so the development of that part of the city will mark the initiation of changes in several structures – Vucevic said for RTS.
He added that the Exit Festival had contributed a lot to branding Serbia and Novi Sad, and that the year 2021 would be full of festivals. Until then, Vucevic says, Novi Sad has five years of work ahead of it.
– This is not a campaign, but a process which needs to last and stimulate other cities and municipalities in Serbia. We're five years away from it, but I don't think we should stop in 2021, we need to continue further down the road we're on, as it obviously produces good results, which have been recognized and acknowledged in a wider context – Vucevic said.
