Honorary Consul of Serbia in Saint Petersburg, Gennady Timchenko, said on Wednesday, October 12, that it was not known at the moment where the South Stream pipeline would go through from Turkey, when and who would build it, but he emphasized that it would be Gazprom in any case and that it would go through Serbia.

– The South Stream pipeline is important not just for Serbia but as a transit through Serbia to Europe – Timchenko said and added that he believed that Gazprom was certainly interested in building the pipeline.

Timchenko says that financing the project is important, but that in this case it is of secondary importance.

– It seems to me that it is important to first acquire all the necessary documents for the construction of the pipeline itself, that is, the permits by those countries it is supposed to go through. But if we reach Turkey, it will be far easier to reach Serbia through the Balkans and I believe that's realistic. The first pipeline will be built to Turkey, as stated at the Energy Summit by our presidents, and the other one would be meant for export – he said in his interview for Sputnik.
