Novamont reported that it had invested EUR 100 million in a abandoned factory near the city of Rovigo for industrial production of bio-butanediol from corn waste.
As stated, they will for the most part produce raw materials for biodegradable plastic for food bags and shopping bags. The factory will be producing 30,000 tons of butanediol a year, whereas, currently, two million tons of it are sold in the world annually.
So far, fossil fuel has been used in the production of butanediol.
