Representatives of Azvirt and the Corridors of Serbia announced yesterday that the Ljig-Preljina highway on Corridor 11 would be completed by October 31, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic invited local contractors to increase the number of workers on the construction site in order for the new deadline not to be missed.

Mihajlovic said that the government would no longer tolerate the cessation of works after 5 pm and that it was necessary that there were at least 200 more workers on the construction site, so that the tunnels and finishing works on the route would be completed on time.

She also announced that a bylaw making the selection of subcontractors stricter would be passed in a short time.

The head of the Belgrade-South Adriatic highway project, Dusan Djokovic, said that there were 600 workers on the construction site and that an additional 100 to 200 might be employed. He added that the initial deadline had been exceeded by two months due to unforeseen and additional works.

The Ljig-Preljina section is 40.3 km long, and the official deadline for the completion of the works was August 25. A parallel road with the length of 29 km along the Ljig-Preljina section will also be completed, of which 21 km has been finished so far.

Finishing works are in progress along the entire section. At the moment, 40 km of the highway in full profile have been paved, i.e. six lanes. Also, all the tunnels have been dug through.

The Azerbaijani company Azvirt is the main contractor, and the works, the total cost of which is EUR 308 million, are financed by the Azerbaijani loan in the amount of EUR 300 million, whereas the remaining amount has been provided by Serbia.

In addition to Azvirt, more than 100 Serbian companies have been hired as subcontractors and suppliers. The documentation has been prepared by the Institute of Transportation CIP for the Takovo-Preljina section and the Highway Institute (Institut za puteve) for the Ljig-Boljkovac and Boljkovac-Takovo sections.
