While life expectancy in the western world is increasing, the problem of the lack of healthcare resources is increasing. In Finland, they hope that they will start using robots in hospitals soon.

Robotic technology can perform up to 20% of medical tasks currently performed by medical technicians and other hospital staff, the expert report by the Finnish marketing company EVA says.

The report is based on existing and developing technologies exclusively. According to it, Finnish nurses might soon start working shoulder to shoulder with their robotic colleagues, since the Finnish hospitals and care centers will soon start hiring robots.

– Robots might soon start transporting patients and equipment, monitoring vital functions and measuring drug dosages – said Mari Kangasniemi, one of the authors of the report.

– For example, robotic drug distribution has been proven to reduce the number of errors and increase safety.

According to the report, robots will also take over monotonous, repetitive jobs, which will allow human workers to dedicate more time to patient care, which demands competence. This is why it is expected that the robotic solution will facilitate direct patient care for nurses.

EVA warns that, despite the fact that robots will be used in hospitals, it is not very likely that they will replace the staff entirely, or lead to considerable reductions in the number of employees.
