Facebook Messenger catching up with Skype and Viber

Facebook Messenger might give serious competition to Skype and Viber. More than 300 million of its billion users makes voice and video calls through FM.
Vice president of messaging products at Facebook, David Marcus, talked about this at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2016 conference. The “elderly” Skype has the same number of users.
Facebook introduced VoIP calls in 2013, implemented one-on-one video calls in 2015 and introduced group voice calls in April 2016.
Although both the audio and the video content are integral to FM, Facebook hasn't invested a lot in the development of a virtual assistant comparable to Alexa, Google Now, Siri or Cortana, which means that it risks lagging behind in this segment.
Google's new messaging app Allo uses the options provided by the new Assistant feature, an extension of Google Now, and enables constant two-way dialogue with the virtual assistant. This could be its great advantage over what Facebook is offering. On the other hand, the advantage of Facebook is that it has a large number of bots at its disposal, capable of performing various tasks.
