Rehabilitation of Petrovaradin-Beočin railway - investment in amount of 16m EUR

The
Chief Executive of "Serbian Railways",
Milanko Šarančić, announced yesterday (February 12, 2008) that 16m EUR would be invested in
reconstruction of the Petrovaradin-Beočin railway.
- The first trains on
the railway, which was closed at the beginning of the last year, should appear
in spring 2009 - said he on the occasion of the signing of the protocol on
rehabilitation of railway, which will be financed by the Executive Council of
Vojvodina,
the Railways and the city of Novi Sad.
The Petrovaradin-Beočin railway, 17.2 km long, was put into operation in 1908 and, between 1965 and the closing of the railway, it had only been used for freight transportation due to bad condition of the railway. On the occasion of the signing of the protocol, it was pointed out that the rehabilitation of the railway would make it possible for cement factory Lafarge BFC from Beočin to transport cement by railway and, in that way, reduce environment pollution and increase safety in road transportation.
