Serbia expecting over 2.5 million tourists in 2016

The director of the Tourist Organization of Serbia (TOS), Marija Labovic, expects that Serbia will be visited by over 2.5 million local and foreign tourists in 2016. She reminded that, from January till June, a total of 1.26 million tourists had visited Serbia, which was 13% more than in the corresponding period of 2015.

– We are especially pleased with the fact that, in the first six months of 2016, the number of local tourists continued to grow, reaching 724,072, that is, 15% more than in the corresponding period of 2015 – Labovic said.

She added that the local tourist turnover continued to grow in 2016, mostly thanks to the Government of Serbia's program involving vacation vouchers and the introduction of a sliding winter recess schedule, which enabled the extension of the winter tourist season and a more evenly distributed usage of local winter tourist capacities.

The most visited destinations by tourists using vouchers are, as she said, Prolom Banja, Sokobanja, Vrnjacka Banja, Kopaonik and Lukovska Banja.

– We are glad that the response is great and that a large number of local tourists and hotel and restaurant keepers who took part in the Government's program have recognized the significance of this incentive, which contributed to the fact that local guests choose, with increasing frequency, to spend their vacation or a part of it in the country – Labovic emphasized.
