Chileans building a wind- and sun-powered subway – Project worth 500 mil USD

The subway in the capitol of Chile will be the first underground railway in the world to use that type of energy.
- The underground railway is heading towards a new future for mankind, the future of eco-friendly transport – she said at the occasion of the commencement of the construction of the first such subway.
To reach the goal of 60% of renewable energy used in the subway, a photovoltaic facility and a windmill farm will be built in the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth.
The entire project will cost 500 mil USD.
The Santiago subway has over 100 terminals, five lines totaling 103 km of length and is used by 2.5 million passangers.
