European Central Bank stops printing banknote EUR 500

The European Central Bank (ECB) announced on Wednesday, May 4 2016 that by the end of 2018 it will stop printing new banknotes of EUR 500, due to concerns that purple banknote is most commonly used by criminals to launder money, even for financing of terrorist activities.

- Banknote of EUR 500 will remain legal payment means and therefore it will be used – ECB communicated after the meeting of the Council, Reuters reported.

The bank added that " a banknote of EUR 500, as well as notes of other values , will always retain their value and will be exchanged at the national central banks within the Euro system over an unlimited period of time”.
