Jorgovanka Tabakovic, the governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), says that the safety and soundness of the banking sector were preserved mainly owing to the central bank's cautious and conservative approach to the supervision process.
The Governor explained that vibrant and continuous development of the banking market and banking practices calls for a vibrant and continuous development of supervision. The role of the supervisor is not a passive one. The supervisor must be forward-looking and proactive about initiating changes that will ensure the achievement of the main objectives of the NBS.
With MIRABANK a.d. Beograd included, the Serbian banking sector now comprises 30 banks, one more than at the end of 2014.
- Special diagnostic studies (SDS), carried out in 14 systemically important banks that account for 88% of banking sector assets, promote the safety and soundness of the Serbian banking sector. As an exercise of unprecedented complexity, number of stakeholders, and objectives, SDS confirmed that our financial system is solvent and stable - said Tabakovic.
